In today's global society, it is important for New Zealanders to be able to speak a foreign language. Learning languages is an important part of our curriculum and is a valuable skill if one is to work and communicate internationally. The study of a second language gives a much greater understanding and appreciation of one's own language and culture as well as the history and culture of the chosen language. It opens up a whole new world to be discovered and enjoyed and increases work opportunities and prospects.
At Rangiora New Life we recognise the promotion of culture as an important aspect of learning a language and we offer, from Y7 to Y13:
- French and Maori with a teacher (Maori being taught from Y1)
- Chinese, Japanese, German, Spanish and Latin by correspondence or video conference from Y9.
All Year 9 students are required to study one of the above languages.
International Languages week is celebrated every year with a well-attended International Lunch and concert.
We have sister schools in 3 countries including New Caledonia where students are given the opportunity to travel there once every 2 years from Y10.
